The Launch of Jumo

Remember the social networking craze that surrounded Barack Obama when he was running for President? There was one person responsible for escalating his campaign to the height of awareness in the social networking world, and that was Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes.

Well, Chris has launched another what-looks-to-be-promising online site as he officially launched his social networking site for social activism called Jumo. And, if he handles this new network the way he has done with Facebook and President Obama’s campaign, he may have another winner on his hands.

Although Chris is only 27 years old, he’s proven that he knows what it takes to build a strong networking community as evidenced in the Presidential campaign, and of course with the millions of Facebookers who are online everyday. The confidence in his ability to build a strong social networking site geared towards social activism is so strong that he has already gotten the financial support of some heavy-hitter venture capitalists, to the tune of $3.5 million. Investors include:

  • The Omidyar Network
  • The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation
  • The Ford Foundation
  • Several private individuals

The investors feel that Chris Hughes’ idea and vision can “unlock mass potential” (from the director at The Omidyar Network), and have no qualms about investing in the launch.

Jumo, which means “to come together”, was created as a social networking platform to help people find and connect with the causes that matter to them. In doing that, they will also find other people who are just as passionate as they are about the same causes.

The Jumo site hopes to design it so that people are encouraged to network and rally together to bring widespread attention (and funding) to their causes, although Mr. Hughes made it clear in his networking address that financial fund-raising would not be the main concentration of the Jumo social site.
