Google Re-Branding Numerous Properties

Google owns a lot of popular territory on the web, and not all of it bears the obvious “Google” tag. Sites like YouTube, Blogger, Picasa, and Orkut are just a few examples. However, it may become more clear to users when they’re on a Google property. The company is set to change the names of several major properties in the next four to six weeks.

This information comes from two insider sources who reported the story first to Mashable. The two properties that have names selected already are Blogger, which will be re-named Google Blogs, and Picasa, which will be re-named Google Photos. Details on exactly how the roll-out will happen, how blogs hosted on the Blogger.com domain will be handled, or what other changes may accompany the re-branding haven’t yet been released. It is assumed, however, that at least some of the big updates taking place with the Blogger overhaul announced in March will be released at the same time as the brand update.

Meanwhile, we’re left to speculate on which other sites may see a name change. Beyond Picasa and Blogger, there’s only one piece of insider information that’s been spoken with confidence: YouTube will be keeping its name. This choice likely reflects a desire to leverage the power of the brand and the established social network, but it could also be due to the difficulty of migrating the servers to a new domain name.

While “a month to a month and a half” was the figure given for the expected updates, some are speculating that July 31st is the most likely date. That’s based on the previous insider information that claimed Google+, the Google social network, would be opening to the public starting on July 31st. Whether or not the re-branding directly coincides with Google+, it’s certain that the desire for brand unification is related to Google’s push into social.
