Google Docs Expands Video Sharing Options

Google Docs never had “humble origins.” It was an ambitious project that aimed to change the way we thought of document creation, editing, and collaboration. What’s more, the line of services has – according to almost any standard you could throw at it – succeeded. Competitors such as Microsoft are even mimicking the Google Docs model for their future updates. But Google Docs hasn’t halted its ambition, either. Continuing a trend to support more file types and more functions for those files, Google is now allowing videos stored in docs to be inserted into Google sites and embedded anywhere on the web.

The update is immediately accessible. To insert a video stored in Google Docs into your Google Site, simply go to Insert > Video > Google Docs Video. This will take you to a menu that lets you choose a video already stored in your Google Docs account. Even though the video is inserted into a live website, however, only users who have your permission will be able to see the videos; if the video isn’t public, only those you specifically shared it with will be able to watch the video content.

The same level of privacy protection applies to embedded videos, and the process for embedding is just as simple. Users will now find HTML code on the right side of the video’s page inside Docs, allowing them to embed the file into any site that allows media objects. The ability to embed and share videos may be an effort to make sharing video content on Google+ – the social network from Google that’s currently in beta testing – easier and more private.

Last, and certainly not least, Google has also added the option to upload captions for videos. These captions are fully searchable, but only by those who you’ve shared the video with.
