Funnybone Marketing

“Laughter is the closest distance between two people” – Victor Borge

Using humor in advertising is probably the most universal way to reach people. Everybody loves to laugh, everybody loves to smile, and everybody loves to share the funny stuff. These days we are all getting emails from friends with links to funny videos, anticipating Superbowl commercials, and getting busted for forwarding a borderline joke to colleagues.

What I find interesting is that with sites like YouTube, Flickr, eBaum’s World, and myspace, sharing humor has reached a new level. I used to rely on other people to send me the funny stuff. Now all I have to do is visit eBaum’s World or YouTube and browse around for what other people decided to post because they wanted to share the laughs.

Companies are taking advantage of this and spreading the word faster than ever. GoDaddy.com had a commercial for their website during the Superbowl and it didn’t take long for it to reach YouTube. Sure, Superbowl commercials are expensive but how else could they get their business that much noise? Domain names are not the most interesting of products, but with a little humor they managed to get more eyes on their brand than any other way.

Here are some other commercials from the Superbowl that ended up on YouTube:

Bud Light

Sprint

Pepsi

Apple is also riding the humor wave, whether they like it or not. They seem to be a favorite target of the funny guys because of their iPod marketing tactics. People are making fun of their packaging, iPod release strategy, and colored dancing advertisements. With all these funny videos being shared, Apple has come to be the one and only when it comes to MP3 players. The competition just can’t compete with that kind of publicity.

The bottom line is that using humor to communicate marketing messages is not only one of the best ways to get people to listen, but also one of the fastest ways to spread your message nowadays. Word of mouth marketing is far cheaper than advertisements and if you make people laugh, they will spread the word for you.
