Google Acquires “eBook Technologies”

Sometimes we hear about a new Google acquisition because they make a big announcement about it; they’re excited about the features, the additions, what it will means for the industry! They want to tell the world. However, there are plenty of occasions where we hear about new moves only because of some insider information or because the acquired company mentions it to their much smaller audience. This is the case with the company eBook Technologies, a group that was recently picked up by Google for their work with eBook distribution.

eBook Technologies changed their site pretty dramatically, cutting away all of the information about their actual products and services and replacing those pages with a simple message that they have been “acquired by Google. Working together with Google will further our commitment to providing a first-class reading experience on emerging tablets, e-readers, and other portable devices.”

Of course, we’ve been able to dig into the past of the company, finding out what it was they used to do and how this is likely to be integrated into the Google framework. eBook Technologies had several lines of services, including eBook reading hardware and distribution services for digital products.

Google’s interest shouldn’t come as a shock to those paying attention to the search engine giant’s services over the last few months. While they’ve been working on their library of digitized books for several years, having conquered about ten percent of all materials ever published in the world, they’ve also been working on the monetization end (both for book sellers and for themselves). They did this most prominently with the introduction of the impressive Google bookstore. It’s almost certain that the eBook distribution ideas from eBook Technologies will be used in this specific sector of Google’s world, although we’ll see the exact details only upon their release.
