YouTube crashes Smirnoff's Tea Partay

Wow, there are some great stats that come from a MarketingSherpa Poll (subscription) that shows viral marketing is bigger than we initially thought. I can't believe that 80% of people are using tell-a-friend links as marketing techniques. That is obviously a pretty good indicator that it's working well too. This is also a good indicator that SMO works as a whole. Look at some of the other numbers too...

* 91% encourage email forwarding

* 80% have tell-a-friend links

* 69% use online games, quizzes, and polls

* 54% use cool microsites

* 47% offer ecards

* 46% use video clips

* 29% use audio clips

The poll also gives a few good reasons why marketers like viral marketing; the potential of explosion and cost are both good reasons. Buzz marketing has been blowing up for awhile and we have noticed the same thing. It really can be very effective if it is done properly. It also has the potential to explode, which is obviously what every marketer is looking for. Take for example this Smirnoff video on YouTube that's been viewed 1.7 million times...

"Tea Partay" is the perfect example of something that spreads naturally. The only way this gets any views at all is from word-of-mouth. I never saw this on TV.

Even if you look at it from an SEO perspective, the number of links a piece of content like this generates is impressive. Unfortunately for Smirnoff all those links ended up going to YouTube instead of the site they set up just for the video. So, in this case something that could have really helped their search engine visibility was overlooked and because of it YouTube is getting most of the traffic.

You would think everyone knows the value of search by now. I guess not, either that or people just simply aren't doing their jobs. They are cutting valuable corners. On the bright side, viral marketing is working great, there are new examples everyday.
