What is 9rules?
Recently Paul Scrivens from 9rules announced that 9rules round 5 will be taking place on October 25th. Some of you may be thinking about entering your blog in round 5 and some of you maybe wondering what 9rules is all about. This blog and Cameron's blog both got accepted into 9rules during round 4 and ever since we have been discovering exactly what 9rules is all about. A lot of the people whom I've talked to see it as a blog network, but as a member here is how I see it...
9rules is not a blog network, 9rules is a community of bloggers.
Over the summer I traveled to Northern California on numerous business trips. During all of my trips up north I got to hang out with a few 9rules members such as Paul Stamatiou, Bryan Veloso, and Guy Kawasaki. We might have talked about blogging and other tech related stuff, but we all bonded and became friends. We all felt that we were part of a community and did not just feel like a group of people who have blogs.
If you have problems or need help 9rules members are there for you.
People have problems in life. Whether it is family, financial or even tech related problems 9rules members are there for you. If you need some paying work members come together and help you find work so you can pay your bills. If you have problems with your computer or blog, 9rulers are there to help you fix them. Whatever your problem is you can count on the 9rules community to be there for you.
Growing your blog can be difficult, 9rules helps you grow.
One of the advantages of being in 9rules is that they can send you some extra traffic. Whether it may be from the 9rules homepage, RSS feed or the newly launched search feature you can get thousands of extra eyeballs discovering, reading and commenting on your blog.
I hope this has shed some light on what 9rules truly is all about. If you want to be a part of this community/family I encourage you to submit your blog to round 5.

Thank you so much for posting this. Many of us think of 9rules as "just" a blog network, but it's really nice to see there's so much more to it than that.

Everything but a business model.
But I'm hoping we'll (finally) see that soon?

Am I the only one who doesn't particularly care what their business model is all that much? From what I've seen from Scrivs and company, they must have something in the works.

Brian, I'm confident that they do have something in the works. But hitching your wagon to something you don't understand is not the smartest thing in the world.
I know that Scrivs and Rundle are smart guys, so I'm anxious to see what they've got cooking. But business models make more certain that your "network" or "community" is actually around tomorrow.

Well other than the fact that 9rules has been profitable for many months now, I guess our business model is still up in the air. Thanks for the concern :)

I guess I just don't see the point in worrying about the business model behind something like 9rules. I don't blog to make money and I suspect 99% of the people involved don't either. I plan on submitting my site in this round, but I can assure you I wouldn't want to be a part of any blog network which concerns itself primarily with making money.
I know exactly what I would be hitching my wagon to, both from my discussions with current members and my own experiences with the network. I'd be happy to join a community of people who are just as dedicated to blogging as I am and who love what they do. Maybe it's just me, but that's more than enough.

Neil, nicely done. :)
Thank you Brian G. for the kind words and your support.
Brian C., people tend to forget that just because something is not obvious doesn't mean it is not there. To make accurate assessments, one would have to have all the facts. Since you write about how to be successful online I thought you'd know that. Of course when digging for treasure it's crucial to be looking in the right spot, isn't it Brian?
For anyone else reading this, yes there is a business model. Really, there is. Says the woman with her degree (and almost done with her Masters) in Business Management.

Mike and Tyme, I absolutely believe you, and never really doubted!
The "not obvious" part is a concern to those more-business minded bloggers. It doesn't matter to Brian, and that's cool. It matters to me, because a non-obvious business models (in this 2.0 stage of NO business models) is a deterrent to participation for some.
Just sharing my thoughts. Hope I didn't ruffle any feathers.

Nope, no feathers ruffled. :)
I realized that there are some concerns which is why I decided to focus more on the business side of blogging on Ping Six, some of which you'll see on 9rules.
For those with concerns, I suggest waiting. There will be other rounds, and I look at sites outside of rounds. Unfortunately this is the age of copy, copy, copy so we will not be publicly disclosing our business model.

Also how do they take sites in the network? Do we get some extra traffic from their site?

Well to be honest the real issue with the 9rules Business Plan is that we keep on misplacing the napkins that we write it on. Whenever we have pizza there is never enough napkins and well you can guess what happens...

Very informative post. I'd been coming back to 9rules more and more often as of late however couldn't really put a peg on what the site was as an entity. The explaination of the site as a community helped make sense of this very interesting and informative body of blogs.
