Tips on finding breaking news
Yesterday I posted on "Making your blog popular through content" by using methods such as breaking news which can help boost your popularity. Although it can be effective it can be difficult and time consuming to try to break news, so here are some ways that might help you find breaking news:
- A lot of people submit stories to digg. Instead of just viewing the front page of digg, go through the upcoming section to see what's new. You might be surprised with what you find.
- Thousands of people go through different aspects of the Internet and bookmark what they feel to be "great" or "unique" things. Start searching social bookmarking sites like del.icio.us where thousands of Internet users have already done the leg work for you.
- StumbleUpon is another great resource where thousands of web savvy users have marked what they like and dislike. This is also a great place to find new stuff.
- When companies are going to release new products they may distribute press releases on the web. Search sites like PRWeb on a daily basis to find breaking news.
- In some (rare) cases breaking news hits old media companies and ends up on their websites first. Keep an eye on old media websites such as nytimes.com, businessweek, etc... you might find something that people are not talking about on the web yet. Many times lots of conversations are started because of articles on these old media websites.
- Industry experts sometimes have the skinny on new things that are happening in their space. Start talking with experts; maybe they will slip some breaking news your way.
In many cases you will be getting your news from other places so it technically might not be considered "breaking news". It does not matter who is the first to report something, it matters more where someone first reads about something. And of course, always try to add something meaningful to the story, so your readers do not feel like you are just regurgitating news, as there are many websites out there that already do that quite well.
These are just a few ways to find breaking news. There are tons of other methods that you can use to find breaking news. If you have a way that I have missed, and you would like to share, go ahead and leave a comment.

Thanks Neil, I have a tech news based podcast. I am always looking for new and better ways to find fresh new news. I pride myself on finding stuff that is not quite the "buzz" yet but being a part of creating it. Great Tips, I have subscribed.
