Technorati Updates User Interface, Adds Authority

Technorati has made several changes to their site and the way they display information about the sites that are indexed by them. Here's a look at what's new.

As Stan points out, the first change is the ranking of sites based on authority. While at first I thought that they had implemented some new algorithm to calculate a site's importance, a closer look it seems that they have just changed the text that used to read '[number of blogs] link here' and rank (based on number of inbound links and number of different blogs linking in), to 'Authority' and the calculation of rank remains the same.

What strengthens my belief is that they haven't made any changes to their help page which explains to the user what each number next to a blog's name means.

More important are the cosmetic changes they have made to how your blog-related information is displayed. The new layout streamlines all the relevant information and is divided into two sections. The right-hand, or main body section contains your latest entries on the top, and right below it, the reactions your content has generated, i.e. posts from people linking to you. The left-hand section contains supplemental information, such as a quick snapshot of your site, followed your fans (people who have favorited your site), and at the very bottom the tags that you use most frequently.

Have a look at what the new Pronet Advertising page on Technorati looks like:

Hej!

I am definitely with you, when it comes to Technorati Authority. It seems they did not change anything but the style of presenting the total number of inbound links to your blog during the last 180 days.

Kind regards, Oliver

I think you missed the point on what is really going on here. They made this change after increasing evidence that they are not counting links accurately and that the Technrati 100 is questionable in it's accuracy and memebership.

Actually David, it doesn't make any difference whether they use inaccurately calculated links to determine rank or inaccurately calculated authority (as mentioned above, based on the same metrics) to determine rank.

The only difference is the words they are using to get the points across. There is no apparent underlying change.

Sorry, I should have gave it context. Many say the new presentation would be confusing to a new user.

Others have pointed out the increasing issues with lack of accuracy.

Like I said David. Nothing has been changed:

"Technorati Authority is the number of blogs linking to a website in the last six months."

It's too bad the Technorati ranking system is completely bogus. Not a single MySpace blog is ranked among their top 100, despite having more readers and comments among their top blogs.

It looks like Technorati is among the last of the nearly extinct dot com bubble company's.
