Official Digg for iPhone Released

With Digg.com being one of the hottest destinations on the net, it was obviously not going to be long before it released an iPhone compatible version of the site. An unofficial version had previously been created, and interestingly enough, the Digg version (though adds functionality), looks strikingly similar to it.

The depth of the iPhone version is limited to only homepage stories, with the ability to Digg and read these stories (only 10 are displayed and there is no option to go back and forth on the front pages), read 5 top rated comments on each story, and click through the Digg link to the actual story.

What is most interesting is the focus Digg has put on delivering their site in whichever ways their users want. Digg had previously released a mobile friendly version which allowed users only to read front page stories and nothing more. After playing with the iPhone version, many mobile users are sure to switch their Digging methods. Not only is this method more versatile, but also looks a lot better.

I tried the iPhone version through EDGE and even with a not-so-good signal the pages loaded fast and the site accepted Diggs faster than the regular version does in my browser.

For business owners, addressing customer needs is one of the most important things to focus on. With more and more people jumping online via their mobiles, and with Apple's iPhone fueling an increase in the mobile market place (with over 700,000 phones sold), creating and shaping mobile friendly versions of web destinations is becoming increasingly important.

All websites should have something in place to modify their site for the browser being used.

Ever try to cruise the web on a PSP? It's impossible unless the site has an optimization for the PSP.

The way digg is doing this is wrong. They should not have a special url for iphone users, they should have the webserver check what browser and screen setting the user is using and then send the appropriate CSS.

It's painful but you can view Digg on Nokia 770. Part of the iPhone advertising buzz had us believe that you got the real Internet - not some stripped down thingy.

This just goes against what the iPhone is supposed to be offering in the way of wireless/handheld pertyNet.
