Marketing Through Giveaways
Marketing doesn't always have to involve using methods like search engine optimization, email marketing, or banner advertising. Instead of using expensive methods of marketing you can also market your company by giving your product away for free to select bloggers.
One person who recently did this was Alexander Barbara from Sarah's Sweet Fountains. Just last week a 16 inch Chocolate Fondue Fountain Party Pack arrived at my door.
The smart thing that Alexander did was that he targeted bloggers that could write about his company and products. Not only did he send me a Chocolate Fondue set, he also sent other bloggers this. By doing this he is creating evangelists that will always end up talking about him and his company.
This is a great way to market your company!

Hi Neil
It just goes to show that there are so many different ways to promote your blog and that there really is no reason to rely solely on the search engines for traffic.

Why would a seller of chocolate fondue fountains target tech bloggers? Clearly it "worked" - you wrote a post about it - but it seems like an odd strategy.

I'd write a post and (ahem) link to someone if they sent me free stuff too, whether a product worth $130 or cash. I don't think this is that 'odd', I've seen plenty of retailers try this trick and it works more often than not. If you're a retailer and not doing this, shame on you.

Sounds a bit much, what is he return in comparison to the promotion?

The sky really is the limit when it comes to promotion, I guess it all depends on whether or not we're prepared to walk the extra mile :)

Online marketing is so saturated and cluttered these days it def. takes some outside of the box thinking for promotions and marketing.

Sometimes these things span the line between clever marketing and gimickry. He got a mention in your blog (presumably once), I clicked on the link to satisfy my curiosity, but it's not something I'll ever buy. So as someone above touched on, what's the true ROI?

I heard giveaways work great for building an opt-in mail list too. I will be writing about this on my blog, but basically you offer something for free and they give their name and email address and before long... you have instant traffic to use!

Great post - and I've crossed this bridge a few times before. One technique I found especially valuable was to register domain names for under 10$ a piece and give them as gifts or business cards even.
One example of how this worked for me, was when I found some available domains for a local business that I wanted to help out. I gave them a domain name for the their website and in return I received some great publicity and an ongoing linkback from their new website.
Domains are just one idea - but Neil is bang on when he says you need to not just give away something for free, but target your giveaways just like a marketing campaign.
Cheers, Kris

Giveaways can be an excellent way to get a toe in the door of a prospect's office...but it can also leave a bad imnpression if the freebie is poorly presented or arrives in poor condition (i.e. a smashed cake).
Clever giveaways accompanied by some great offer or call to action are worth the extra effort.

I agree with this way of marketing and just think you have to be smart about who you send the stuff to. Food is always a good one as well as it appeals to everybody and is relitevly cheap

yeah, right now everybody loves anything for free. Giveaways, no matter how small, (but should be useful!) are a great marketing strategy.

This is a great way to hit customers in areas you never thought were possible. I'm going to buy a fondu set right now... joking! How do you think condom companies would do if they sent a box of trojans to all the bloggers?
