Marketing Through Giveaways
Marketing doesn't always have to involve using methods like search engine optimization, email marketing, or banner advertising. Instead of using expensive methods of marketing you can also market your company by giving your product away for free to select bloggers.
One person who recently did this was Alexander Barbara from Sarah's Sweet Fountains. Just last week a 16 inch Chocolate Fondue Fountain Party Pack arrived at my door.
The smart thing that Alexander did was that he targeted bloggers that could write about his company and products. Not only did he send me a Chocolate Fondue set, he also sent other bloggers this. By doing this he is creating evangelists that will always end up talking about him and his company.
This is a great way to market your company!

Hi Neil
It just goes to show that there are so many different ways to promote your blog and that there really is no reason to rely solely on the search engines for traffic.

Why would a seller of chocolate fondue fountains target tech bloggers? Clearly it "worked" - you wrote a post about it - but it seems like an odd strategy.

I'd write a post and (ahem) link to someone if they sent me free stuff too, whether a product worth $130 or cash. I don't think this is that 'odd', I've seen plenty of retailers try this trick and it works more often than not. If you're a retailer and not doing this, shame on you.

Sounds a bit much, what is he return in comparison to the promotion?

The sky really is the limit when it comes to promotion, I guess it all depends on whether or not we're prepared to walk the extra mile :)

Online marketing is so saturated and cluttered these days it def. takes some outside of the box thinking for promotions and marketing.

Sometimes these things span the line between clever marketing and gimickry. He got a mention in your blog (presumably once), I clicked on the link to satisfy my curiosity, but it's not something I'll ever buy. So as someone above touched on, what's the true ROI?

I heard giveaways work great for building an opt-in mail list too. I will be writing about this on my blog, but basically you offer something for free and they give their name and email address and before long... you have instant traffic to use!
