How Do You Get Your Diggs?

Hi everyone, given that I am new here, I am trying to get an idea of what the Pronet audience thinks about certain topics. I have listed some common methods for gathering votes on the popular socially driven news and content site, Digg.

Instead of just using a fancy schmancy embed poll, I have decided to rely on old-fashioned participation. So, please be honest and let me know what you think about each in the comments. You can choose to be anonymous or you can divulge your name and your url. The more information you give, the better, because it will help us link back to you when we announce the results in a following post (yes this is also an opportunity to get a link back from Pronet).

  1. Bulk emailing people with a story link and text that says "Please Digg"
  2. Sending Instant Messages to friends asking them to Digg a submission
  3. Paying (or using 3rd party pay services) people to Digg your stories
  4. Adding everyone on Digg as a friend and Digging their stories in hopes that they will Digg yours in return
  5. Sharing your Digg submission link on Facebook and saying "Please Digg"
  6. Relying on good content
  7. Other methods

Please let me know your feelings on these, whether you feel they are good, bad, right, wrong, ethical, unethical...anything. Maybe you could let us know what works the best. Hopefully this will lead to some very good discussion.

Enjoy the post? Here are some more that may interest you.

Since the only reason for Digg to exist is to socially select the best contents, I thing number 6 is the only one acceptable.

But I don't get any Diggs, so perhaps I'm wrong.

At Gamegrope.com, I admit I've spammed Digg with submissions... well, not really spammed, I always do my best to avoid submitting duplicates or uninteresting news, but I have submitted a lot of my own stuff. This was less to get on the homepage (though that would be nice), and more an experiment in rapidly increasing my search engine rankings. And actually, just getting in the "10 hottest" list in Upcoming Gaming news a few times has scored me quite a few blog mentions.

I never rely on friends or paid diggs - once I submit an article, it's up to the Digg community. I actually intend to discontinue any digging of my own articles, unless I feel they are VERY unique and interesting. While my little SEO experiment was neat, in the long run I don't want to be blacklisted by the Digg community as a spam blog, which my blog is definitely not.

Chris Sandberg, June 21, 2007

I have tried everything on that list, except 3, and from my own personal experience, a combination of 4 and 6 have been the most effective. The other methods didn't work very well because most people aren't very active Digg users, so most people ignore any messages you send. 4 used to work well because by adding friends on Digg you would get the attention of people who actually were active Digg users and would likely Digg your story if it was interesting, however this seems to be less effective than it used to be.

Good Content alone may be the ideal, but I don't think it will every be the case no matter what Digg tries to do. Digg is too much like the real world. People who already get attention or have the resources to get attention will get it. Big companies who have the budget to hire PR firms to get them media exposure will get it. It is no different on Digg. Popular blogs with a large readership can easily get on Digg's homepage as long as their content is pretty good. A no name blog with an extraordinary story will have a hard time getting on the homepage, unless they employ some of the other methods you have listed.

Chris Sandberg, June 21, 2007

I agree with Gamegrope.com that it would be best to avoid digging your own stories. If you want to get on Digg, I think the best method would be to build up your audience through other methods first, then your existing audience will help you get more exposure on Digg.

JakeNudge, June 21, 2007

Kevin Rose and the team at Digg have put in an extraordinary amount of effort to remove loopholes in getting a high ranking on the site and for good reason. The whole reason Digg works so well is due to its inability to be exploited otherwise there would be tons of stories on how to get cheap Viagra ;)

If you write great content, then eventually you will get there.

Jeremy Steele, June 21, 2007

I tend to think paying people to Digg is pretty unethical, but I don't see any problem with letting someone know your content made it onto Digg, assuming its a one or two time thing. If "friends" were to start spamming me with "Digg this" requests that'd be... well... spam.

Ken, June 21, 2007

I publish the best content I can and provide a "Digg" button at the bottom of my articles along with other social networking buttons. I don't actually put much concern or effort into Digg beyond the Digg button on my pages. If one of my articles makes it into Digg and then makes it big, great, but it isn't an end all be all objective for me. I actually get more traffic from other social networking sites than I do from Digg.

Our objectives should be solid long term traffic and any success on Digg would be a short lived flash in the pan. It is better to focus one's efforts on long term pay offs then it is to be constantly be wasting effort chasing short lived Digg glory. If we do get that flash in the pan from Digg we can look at it as a nifty little bonus.

Pete W, June 22, 2007

6, boosted by emailing a select chosen few who'll enjoy it, and saying if they want, they can digg it too.

Ragnar Danneskjold, June 22, 2007

As the owner of Subvert and Profit, I have the most experience with #3. It is misguided to assume that the best content will get on Digg without assistance, since there are over 8000 stories submitted to Digg every day.

Subvert and Profit does work, as this blog was nice enough to write about this week. There are no guarantees, but our success rate is about 2 out of 3 at this point.

Ipodwheels @ Auto Parts for Brains, June 22, 2007

I have been digging since I have discovered the site last year and I would be lying to myself if I'd say that I did not dream of having some of my posts dugg at the front page of Digg.

At first, I thought that it is all about content to conquer that site. But though a lot of those which make the homepage are indeed interesting, I have discovered from experience that having good interesting content is not enough. There are literally hundreds of submissions out there on every new topic that one has to fight to get the attention one wants for his submission. One has to get the eye of the famed Digg mob to even grace the front pages of their popular list.

It is not easy too, because Digg hates people who submit their own stuff. So if you really want to make it big, your best bet is to get someone already respected in Digg to submit and vote your story. I don't think there is any of the big names in Digg who does submission for anybody, either for money or whatever. So again it boils down to content.

If you get lucky enough to be really cool friends with someone respected, the benefits from that relationship does not last long either. Digg looks like it also has an aversion for friends digging friends' articles. If you get really unlucky, you can be viewed by the site as a promoter or an employee of a friend's blog giving posts from your friend an automatic ban when you vote on them.

So how do I approach Digg when I want my content syndicated? I try my best to come up with interesting content which I can be sure will come only from my blog. I email this article to a few friends, diggers and non diggers alike, noting that they can submit it to any site they want to. I then cross my finger, hoping and praying that when one of them do decide to submit my post, Kevin Rose will see my post and think it interesting.

P.S. Long term, I don't think that Digg will get you consistent traffic nor loyal subscribers, that is unless you have really good content that will normally draw people to your site.

Brett Borders, June 24, 2007

The key to promoting content on Digg is befriending the right people. Try to cultivate reciprocal relationships with active users whose content you enjoy following. Review your friends' submissions religiously - twice a day, every day - and Digg up all the stories you like or can tolerate. After a while, some of these people will take notice. They'll add you as a friend and begin to Digg up your stories, too. Prune inactive or non-reciprocating users from your list until you have a small, active network of friends who can be counted on to check on (and hopefully Digg) your submissions without being asked to.

Look legitimate; don't promote your own content too frequently. For every original piece you try for, submit at least three or four great articles from non-commercial sites that the community will enjoy. Then when you submit your own article, your loyal friends will give it a "bump" of 10 or 15 Diggs that will help get it on "Upcoming Stories" radar. Once a story gets a little bit of visibility in the upcoming section, true natural selection takes over. If the headline and content are compelling enough, it will then have a fighting chance to make the home page.

Simon Dance, June 25, 2007

Personally, it's all about good content, and then the people will come.

Unfortunately, getting diggs isn't a problem I face yet. Onerealman.com is brand new and doesn't get enough traffic to even worry about Digg.
