Getting Links 5 of 5
Some people do not believe in link building, are not concerned with it, or do not know about it, and in these cases link popularity is achieved naturally over time. So how do these people increase their link popularity naturally? They grow their links by writing good content or by creating a good product/service.
Content

Brian Benzinger, the author of Solution Watch does not do any sort of link building campaigns for his blog. He spends his time writing good, in-depth content on web 2.0 companies. He has been writing for over 1 year and already has over 20,000 natural incoming links which gets him a lot of search engine love.
Products/Services

Box.net created an online storage solution for anyone looking to store files online. They did not concentrate on link building and instead they concentrated on building a good product. Because they did this they naturally got 21,165 incoming links and a lot of search engine love.
Effectiveness
So how effective is natural link building? It has been effective for many sites such as Solution Watch and Box.net, but it has also been ineffective for other sites. If you have a site with good content or a good service and it cannot be found then it will not get linked to naturally.
If you plan on going the natural link building route, make sure you get found. By using marketing or by placing ads (not too natural though) you will get traffic and if people like your site they will link to it. If you do not have an advertising budget you can start spreading the word about your site virally. I personally do not like going with natural link building because it could take a long time before your site gets popular, but unlike the other link building methods it is rare that you will be penalized or banned by the search engines from "natural link growth".

Great point about building a product being an effective way of getting links. Seems like a lot of people really concentrate on the outside action of bringing in visitors but totally look over the fact they they need to have a good product first and foremost.
