Discovering a new Google design

As some of you may have noticed, I am addicted to stats. Every couple of hours I have to look at my blog stats or else I go crazy. Today I noticed that my Google traffic went up drastically and my referrers showed that I was getting traffic for terms such as "soesman", so I decided to do a Google search and check it out. And lucky me, when I did a search I saw a newly designed Google search result page.

I've heard a few people mention seeing that design over the last few months.

My suspicion is that Google are randomly (with very low chance) showing a different layout to do usability/acceptance tests on it.

Andrew, I thought the design was new. Thanks for setting me straight.

Your better placement must be caused by google is updating back links and thereby their pageranks, resulting better placements :)

I haven't been able to see the new design IRL - is the markup still as awful as before?

Neil Patel, September 19, 2006

Thomas, Google is constantly updating which probably caused a shift in my Google traffic. The backlink update has been happening for a couple weeks and my Google traffic did not change until now.

As for the markup, I was not able to check. I am unable to see the new Google design anymore.

Me and you both, brother. :)

Giri, if you clear your cache and cookies it should go back to the normal Google design.
