Digg API Contest Reminder/Update

There's less than a week to go until the Digg API Contest deadline. Be sure to get your submissions in by 8pm (Pacific) on next Wednesday, May 16th.

There have been quite a few good tools already made with the API, Muhammad covered two of them previously and Mashable published their top 7 last week. I literally use the Smart Digg Button every single day, so that would have to be my early-on favorite (assuming Derek submitted it, which I don't know why he wouldn't seeing the prizes).

Here are a couple more interesting ones:

Map of Digg Friendships. Basically this is a giant visual representation of Digg's users' relationships. On click of the picture you are prompted to enter any Digg member's user name. Doing so will take you to where they are located on the chart.

I think it's interesting because it maps out the community a lot like a galaxy. Many of the former top users are bright peaks you see (I'm in the upper left). As far as I can tell, the higher the peak the more friends a user has, the closer to the center, the more fans (non-reciprocated friends) they have. Guess who's smack-dab in the middle - yep, Kevin Rose and his 27,000+ fans (and only 62 friends).

Another interesting, though somewhat faulty (remember to hit enter to submit as there is no button) mashup is called Diggwatcher. It gives you a single page in which you can enter a user name to track any comment threads that person is involved in (including responses), track all of your friends' comments, track stories posted from a specific domain, and lastly track the comments to stories posted from a specific domain.

These are a great way to see what people are saying about you/to you or if any of your content is submitted and if so who is saying what about it.

The contest is already producing some very cool tools, lets hope people were saving the best stuff for the final week.

Enjoy the post? Here are some more that may interest you.

I'd love to submit the Smart Digg Button to the contest, but unfortunately its a visualization contest and requires you use both the API and the Flash toolkit.

I'll have to wait for the Digg Firefox Extension contest :)

The friends map is pretty cool. But I feel like a pretty big loser now. :)

Although the data it's using is not current. I have quite a few more friends (and fans) than I used to, but the map still lists me as 3 & 5. Weird. But great find!

Thanks for the mention :-)

You might notice a button at the top left of the map that says "Show Time" -- that should help clear up how the users are sorted.. Oldest accounts in the center, newest around the perimeter.

A few days after I released the map w/ search functionality, I created a version that places little indicators on users who are Digging stories, all in real time.

@Derek - I didn't realize that - that sucks your extension is awesome.

@Brian - Oh, okay that makes sense, oldest accounts in the center, I'll have to check out your new version. Thanks.
