Digg API Already Being Put to Good Use
A little while back we reported that Digg had finally released an API along with a flash application toolkit. Not a lot of time has passed since then but there are already a few excellent tools that have been developed based on the API.
The first tool let's you see who is Digging whose stories and how frequently. While your first thoughts may be that this tool will only make it easy for people to engage in 'you rub my back and I will rub yours' type of activity, the tools is actually much more useful from a community perspective.

By finding out who most appreciates the kind of content you are submitting, you can easily discover what users have their interests most in line with you and you can add them and see what content they are submitting, which based on their interests you are bound to enjoy.
The second tool is actually developed by a friend of mine, and the ever-prolific, ex-Digg number 1, Derek van Vliet (BloodJunkie). Aptly named the Smart Digg Button, it makes the website-based 'Digg button' obsolete by integrating the button directly into the browser. The tool uses the Digg API to determine whether a particular page you are viewing has been submitted to Digg or not. If the page has been submitted, then the Firefox extension shows you the number of Diggs the page has already amassed. Conversely, if the page has not been submitted yet, the tool takes you to the Digg submission page to submit the story.

I was amazed at how you were able to dynamically get a Digg user's username into that "Who's Digging You" dialogue box in your article...until I realized it was just a picture.

Very helpful tools indeed. I really like the way smart digg integrates into Firefox. Thanks for the finds.
